MULCH

Mulching simply means putting a layer of cover on the surface of the ground which will rot into the soil over a period of time. The wood Chipping's left behind after your stump has been removed are ideal for use around the garden and if not used as mulch in your flower beds could be put to use in your children's play area. (This obviously wouldn't be advised if you have previously treated the stump with chemicals)

The benefits of using the Chipping's as a mulch around the garden are:

Improvement of soil structure as the organic matter rots down. The mulch protects the soil from heavy rain and stops the soil compacting which can be harmful. As the organic matter rots down Nitrogen is released encouraging earth worms which further help the earth as they burrow creating channels for water to drain of improving aeration.

Insulation of soil from extreme temperatures. A thick layer of mulch on the soil acts as an insulator which helps root development. (If your mulch is too thick I.e. 10" or more your mulch is likely to compost dramatically overheating the soil beneath possibly causing injury to roots below)

Reduces evaporation from the soil and reduces the amount of time spent watering the garden as the mulch soak's up moisture like a sponge which then drips through. (Deep mulches should be avoided in waterlogged areas as evaporation from the soil surface will be slowed.)

Suppresses weed growth in your flower beds. You will need 4 inches of mulch to completely block the light from the soil beneath.
